Estimating project time is an extremely important part of project management. Yet, many people who are new to the field struggle with this particular skill. Typically, the best place to start is thinking about every activity that a project needs. In construction, this may include such tasks a demolition, finishing, adding light fixtures, and putting in flooring.
After managers understand everything a project needs, they can start grouping activities that are connected. For example, workers cannot start laying new flooring in a room until all demolition has been completed. If demolition takes two weeks and flooring takes one week, then it will take a total of three weeks for flooring to be done.
This method of estimating time keeps managers more organized. Since they can consider the timing of each individual activity, they can get a better idea of who will work on said activity and what sort of materials they need. This keeps managers from getting too overwhelmed by the project as a whole. And it reduces the chances that activities or materials will be forgotten, thus leading to an increase in project cost or time.
